When you see a bird FLYING, you don’t call it exercising. When you see a fish SWIMMING, you don’t call it exercising. But when we WALK, we call it exercising??? You do realize that we are SUPPOSED TO WALK!! We have legs, that is how we get around…just like that bird and fish! While I understand that walking is a starting point for some, that is Point Zero. For true fitness, walking will not be enough.
Exercise (from the word exert): Activity requiring physical effort, carried out esp. to sustain or improve health and fitness. i.e. – exercise improves your heart and lung power
I spoke to a group of women at a church recently on this topic. A lady said to me, “I have been walking for a while now. You say that I am not exercising?” I ask her, “well are you seeing the results you want?” She looks down at her body, then at me, and shakes her head “no.” I said, “well there is your answer!” You cannot keep doing the same thing at the same level and expecting results. You have to push yourself to the next level!
Your real gains are gonna be seen once you get past Point Zero. When walking is the biggest exertion of your day, that probably means that your life up til this point has been lacking. Eventually to keep feeling exertion, you may have to start jogging or cycling or some other activity. You should also add strength training. This doesn’t mean hitting the iron just yet. There are plenty of body weight exercises that you can do if you are just starting out to build strength…push ups, squats, planks. You can use resistance bands or small hand weights. There are so many options. So explore them!
