It should be evident that obesity rates and health related issues running rampant in our country. (Nearly 70% of adults are overweight or obese and 47% of children (ages 2-19) are overwieght or obese.) But there are many people who are bucking this trend. I hear the many reasons/excuses why people can’t get to the gym (family obligations, work, time, etc), so I decided to highlight people that are focusing on their health in spite of all of that. SO INTRODUCING….
Remi Ogunleye “Remi TheTrainer”
When did you fall in love with health and fitness? I fell in love with health and fitness in 2009 when I saw how quickly my body changed from training consistently 4 – 5 days a week.
How has health and fitness changed your life? Health & fitness has changed my life tremendously! I was never an athlete in school, I didn’t want to sweat my hair out as a young adult and was happy with my “thick” body. After the birth of my daughter I noticed that my body wasn’t exactly the same. I made it my mission to have a better body than I had before giving birth and I did!
How are you able to balance your personal responsibilities (kids, spouse, other family obligations, work, hobbies, etc)? Balancing my personal responsibilities while working towards my fitness goals is not easy. As a mother of a 6 year old I have to resist temptation of all the little goodies that I don’t restrict my daughter from! I make it easier by preparing myself and family similar meals. If I’m adding brown sugar to her oatmeal, I’ll add splenda to mines.
How do you fit in workouts when your time is limited? When time is limited – I fit my workouts whenever I can! I have never been a morning person but I have recently learned that in order to get it done, somedays it is best to wake up and train at 5AM when my family is still asleep.
What was the biggest life adjustment on this journey? The biggest life adjustment on this journey has been my diet. When I first fell in love with working out, I had not changed my diet. Preparing for my first bikini competition in 2011 was my introduction to the world of “clean eating.”
What is your favorite workout move? My favorite workout move would have to be jump squats! I love how it targets glutes, quads and gets my heart pumping.
What is your favorite clean meal? Clean treat? (Please share a recipe) My favorite clean meal is oatmeal, egg whites and turkey bacon (boring, I know). This is the breakfast that I eat when preparing for a competition and I love it so much that I eat it every day even when I’m not preparing for a competiton.
Can you offer any advice to other busy women on how to get started down a healthier path? My advice to other busy women wanting to get started is to just get started! There’s so much information and support out there for us. Make small changes daily and don’t beat yourself up if you slip up – just keep going. Consistency is key!
What are your future goals? My future goals are to continue competing and being a good role model for all women wanting to change their health & fitness for the better!
