It should be evident that obesity rates and health related issues running rampant in our country. (Nearly 70% of adults are overweight or obese and 47% of children (ages 2-19) are overwieght or obese.) But there are many people who are bucking this trend. I hear the many reasons/excuses why people can’t get to the gym (family obligations, work, time, etc), so I decided to highlight people that are focusing on their health in spite of all of that. SO INTRODUCING….
When did you fall in love with health and fitness? We’ve had a somewhat abusive love/hate relationship for the past 2 years. Toward the end of 2009.
How has health and fitness changed your life? Well, it really helped me to change my diet. I determined that I would never limit myself to what I am eating as long as it’s done in moderation. I want to be able to enjoy life and some foods that I really enjoy.
As far as fitness goes, I realized that I’m not as disciplined as I would like to be. I know exactly how I want to look, but I’ve started and restarted regimens so many times. I know that it’s something that I need to do, I just need to get my emotions out of it. Emotions are flaky and as long as I am acting out of my feelings, I’ll never achieve my goals. I recommitted myself to eating cleaner and working out just recently. In fact, to avoid temptation, I got rid of everything unhealthy in my house. Even the snacks are healthy. If I want to cheat, I’m going to have to spend money, and I don’t have the money for that. I need to get my fantasy body.
How are you able to balance your personal responsibilities (kids, spouse, other family obligations, work, hobbies, etc)? I am still working on the balance. Something will always demand my attention, taking me away from my focus. I have a few methods of working out. I still need to complete the Insanity program (a few false starts) and I have access to a gym, I have the UFC Trainer on my XBOX Kinect, as well as other physical games. Since I am determined to work out every single day, there is always something I can do.
How do you fit in workouts when your time is limited? I try to squeeze in some sort of activity with the XBOX Kinect. The games are fun and it doesn’t feel like a workout.
What was the biggest life adjustment on this journey? I had to stop eating just because it tastes good. I am a lover of food, and with the way I love pasta, you’d think I was part Italian.
What is your favorite workout move? Incline Bench Sit-Ups, Leg Raises. I like to make my abs scream.
What is your favorite clean meal? Clean treat? (Please share a recipe) Vegetarian Pepper Steak: I chop up thawed veggie burgers and sauté them in olive oil with onions, peppers, and garlic. I serve it over brown rice and drizzle with mushroom gravy.
Can you offer any advice to other busy women on how to get started down a healthier path? Take it one day at a time. I get really excited when I recommit to my health and go and buy a whole bunch of stuff and end up overwhelmed and shut down. I learned how to pace myself. Make a conscious change to your eating habits and your exercise and maintain that. Once you’ve mastered that, make a more challenging change.
What are your future goals? Abs, butt, legs, arms… lol. I want to be more than toned, I want to be defined. By this time next year, I intend for my body to have dramatically changed. Combined with clean eating and consistency with my workouts, I know I can do it.
