Even if you have the desire to do something, without a specific goal, you may not be successful. Having no goal is akin to being in a boat at sea, rowing, rowing, rowing with all of your might WITHOUT a compass or a map. You will NEVER get any where. (Ok, you may get somewhere, but it may not be where you really wanted to go…it could be very well back at where you began depending on the current, weather, and wind patterns.) You will be expending a ton of energy, but basically going in circles. Now once you get a specific destination in mind, a map, and a compass, you will be better able to get to that destination. That’s why I press my clients, and others who are just seeking advice, to really narrow down a goal. This doesn’t have to be a long-term goal, just something right now…”I want to eat breakfast everyday.” “I want to get into the gym at least 3 times per week.” “I want to get better at meal planning.” These are the smaller, more manage-able goals that will help lead to the bigger goals like, “I want to fit into _____ by summer.” “I want to weigh _____ by my wedding.” “I want to be off my medication by fall.”
When I took control of my health, I was 172 lbs and a size 12. I wanted to get down to 150 and a size 10. Ok, well I smashed those goals, what next? Ok, let’s run a half marathon…DONE! Ok, maybe I will do a figure competition…DONE. Ok, let me change the health of my family, community, and world…STILL WORKING ON THAT ONE! But it will be done…trust me!
If you take on the big goals, and fall short, you will get discouraged. But if you make mini goals and hit them, you will be able to hit the bigger ones. You have your destination in mind, you got your map, you have your compass, now all you gotta do is ROW!!
