It should be evident that obesity rates and health related issues running rampant in our country. (Nearly 70% of adults are overweight or obese and 47% of children (ages 2-19) are overwieght or obese.) But there are many people who are bucking this trend. I hear the many reasons/excuses why people can’t get to the gym (family obligations, work, time, etc), so I decided to highlight people that are focusing on their health in spite of all of that. SO INTRODUCING….
When did you fall in love with health and fitness? I have been in love with it for years, but never got serious until 2001. Ironically, it was on September 11 of that year when I decided I had had enough. This wasn’t because of the events of that day. I was just sick and tired of all my clothes bring too tight, chafing from hosiery, etc. Ever since then, I have been dedicated, even through a second pregnancy, and dealing with losing all my hard work to an under active thyroid.
How has health and fitness changed your life? It’s given me confidence! I go sleeveless, I wear skinny jeans, and I wear a bikini on the beach! No, I’m not at goal yet, but I feel great about me! This is wonderful, considering that for the first 40 years of my life, I didn’t like me too much. Now, at almost 44, I believe I can do anything.
How are you able to balance your personal responsibilities (kids, spouse, other family obligations, work, hobbies, etc)? I’m a stay at home mom, working on my second certification as a fitness trainer. People think that because I stay home, I have unlimited time. NOT! With one vehicle and endless errands, plus household duties, I have to make the time. I make appointments for ‘me time’ as well(massage, nails, etc.), to maintain my own balance. I’m not very organized, sad to say(work in progress!), but I still get things done. I have also learned to not sweat it if something doesn’t get done right away.
How do you fit in workouts when your time is limited? Bottom line is, I just do it. I have to. If I don’t have enough time to go to the gym, I go right outside. If the weather is bad, I pop in a DVD.
What was the biggest life adjustment on this journey? Kids. I have two. Blessings to those with more.
What is your favorite workout move? I’m obsessed with working my shoulders, and I love barbell upright rows.
What is your favorite clean meal? Clean treat? (Please share a recipe) Tough question! I love a huge spring mix salad with a self-seasoned turkey burger patty and a sweet potato. Makes a fantastic third meal. As far a clean treats, macaroni and cheese! I prepare it the traditional way, but use fat-free evaporated milk and fat- free and 75% reduced fat cheese mixed. Instead of flour, I use an egg and egg whites, and instead of butter, I use just a little olive oil. I also use multigrain macaroni. The other seasonings are the same.
Can you offer any advice to other busy women on how to get started down a healthier path? You have to figure out your why. Once you figure that out, do your research on how to get there, and seek the advice of those who have gone before.
What are your future goals? I still consider myself only halfway to my goal. I’ve lost 50 lbs so far, and am working toward shedding about 30 to 40 more. I am still toying with the idea of competing down the road, but I am not focused on that right now. Right now, I want to complete my certification, and start really working with others to help them realize their health and fitness goals.
