Our skin is the body’s largest organ. Skin is considered an organ because it grows, regenerates, breathes, absorbs things from the environment (good and bad), regulates our temperature, and is the first line of protection from pathogens and diseases. Our skin is also a mirror for our healthy (or unhealthy) behaviors. I know everyone has heard the saying, “you are what you eat.” Well I am a living, breathing testimony that this is true. The healthier the food you eat, the better your skin will look and the healthier you will be in general. Oh and you want to find the fountain of youth? Well, there is no fountain, but the answer is in your fridge.
- Water…good, clean water: Our bodies are mostly water. We need water to keep us hydrated and to help move nutrients around our body and cells. Different sources suggest different amounts of water daily. But drinking a gallon of water is my suggestion. It well help keep you moisturized and your skin younger looking.
- Nuts and other healthy fats (like that found in fish): These healthy fats build stronger cell membranes, which act to keep moisture in and the bad stuff out. So fortify yourself with this “armor” of sorts to keep your cells strong.
- Berries: There are so many free radicals in the environment looking to attack your skin. These fruits are high in antioxidants that guard against enviromental damage, prevent disintegration, and keep you looking younger.
- Leafy green veggies: Leafy greens are so packed with different essential vitamins and have the highest concentration of any other food. They also tend to be high in fiber which helps with waste elimination, (sexy I know.) And they are naturally low in calories and fat…so eat up and eat in volume. Filling up on veggies, (as long as they are not polluted with cheese and saturated fats and breading), will help keep your skin healthy and strong.
Everything that I listed above (along with chicken and my healthy starches) are the very staples of my everyday diet. This has been my “secret.” My skin is healthy, my body fat has reduced dramatically, and my muscles are so strong. Just give it a try. Clean eating is a lifestyle change that will really improve your life.
